ART SCHOOL
ABOUT US
Wandie M School Art (WMSA) is a registered NPC since 2018. It has since implemented an after-school photography programme (called the Buddies After School Photography Programme). The Programme's pilot commenced in 2019, continuing to 2020.
With the power of photography, “Buddies” will have the ability to shape their own narratives, and spark conversations regarding local and global issues.
As well as create their own job opportunities with the help of WMSA.
The programme is designed as an after school programme, focused on teaching high school learners basic photography skills, visual communication and storytelling. The Buddies After School Photography Programme is first step towards a vision of opening the first art school in Qumbu.Qumbu is a small, rural village where there are few resources and opportunities for young people. Based in the Mhlontlo Ward in the Eastern Cape, the South African Census 2011 data showed that almost 24% of the population was between the ages of 15 – 24 (a total of 2 126 young people). 76.8% of them lived in income poor households, and historically, a minority of young people completed their basic education (31,6% of 20 – 24 year olds had a matric).
Wandie M School Art plans to facilitate the Buddies After School curriculum to teach Gr 9 – 12 learners in Qumbu the art of photography, thereby introducing them to a powerful medium of storytelling and helping to build their sense of agency. Establishing a thriving after school club in Qumbu would also create a positive shared experience and sense of identity for learners who have little else within the local community.
Ultimately, WAMSA aims to build young people in Qumbu’s sense of agency and expression – in a rural village where no similar opportunities exist. Through this experience, the aim is to help young people “express their views of the world around them”, showcase and express their views in local exhibitions. Through exhibiting learners’ photographs, there would be a direct community dialogue towards challenges faced by learners, youth and community at large.
